As part of our community health partnership with Valley Health, our conversation this month focused on getting to know your lipids. Joining me to talk about cholesterol was Jimmy Dingess, FNP-C.  Jimmy, a self-professed lipid nerd, runs the Lipid Clinic at Winchester Cardiology and Vascular Medicine I Valley Health.

Jimmy explained the difference between "good" cholesterol (HDL) and "bad" cholesterol (LDL) and the function of each. He told us how to read a lipid panel and gave an idea of what those numbers should typically be. We talked about different medications including statins and how they present opportunities for lowering cholesterol but in some cases also produce side effects.

He told us about the importance of a healthy diet and the role exercise plays in lowering cholesterol. We discussed different types of diets, saturated/unsaturated fats, and healthy substitutions that can be made.

Before we wrapped up our conversation, we talked about the 29th Annual Valley Health Community Wellness Festival at Apple Blossom Mall happening on Saturday, February 25, 2023 from 10am - 5pm. It's a great opportunity to take advantage of free and reduced-cost health screenings, learn from over 80 health and wellness exhibitors, and get motivated by fitness and healthy cooking demonstrations. Kids will enjoy the Healthy Kids Experience, a dedicated area for kids to have fun while learning about wellness and fitness. Low-cost bloodwork with LIPID panel (and more) will be available plus Jimmy's colleagues from Winchester Cardiology and Vascular Medicine I Valley Health will offer free 12 lead EKGs and carotid ultrasound screenings. Learn more at valleyhealthlink.com/wellnessfestival.
