On Exhibit at The Museum of the Shenandoah Valley

We recorded today's show on location at The Museum of the Shenandoah Valley with Cory Garman, Director of Exhibitions, and Julie Armel, Deputy Director of Community Relations for the organization. Prior to recording, Julie & Cory gave me the full tour of the gardens and exhibits. I'm ashamed to say that as a life-long Winchester/Frederick County resident, I had never seen the entire grounds. There are vegetable gardens, flower gardens, rose gardens; there are fountains, springs, and pools surrounded by greenery and color. And that, is just the outside space. Inside the museum, we toured the permanent exhibits that include over 11,000 pieces ranging from the fine and decorative arts collected by MSV benefactor Julian Wood Glass Jr., to the miniature houses and furniture amassed by MSV curator of gardens R. Lee Taylor, to the objects and artifacts of the Shenandoah Valley accumulated by the MSV starting in 1999. For me, the centerpiece was the Tiffany Glass: Painting with Color and Light exhibition which was breathtaking. It consists of five windows, nineteen lamps, and more than 100 pieces of opalescent flat glass. It was initially expected to close on September 1, 2019 but that date has been extended through September 8, 2019. If you can at all, arrange a tour/visit, I would highly recommend it. During our show conversation, Cory explained what goes into choosing, preparing and showing the various exhibits. We talked about some that he has chosen not to feature for various reasons and talked about the actual "construction" that is involved in most cases. Julie told us a bit about the permanent exhibits, the upcoming collections and we talked about Yappy Hour happening on Saturday, August 31, 2019.
