Our conversation today with Chris Konyar, Director of Winchester City Parks & Recreation was full of updates about construction projects, pocket park improvements, park events, and of course, fireworks.

Chris explained a few construction projects happening at Jim Barnett Park that include two new rectangular turf fields for soccer (primarily) that will also have lights, six new pickleball courts being installed in the former FamilyLand location, and talked about updates and improvements happening to several of the fourteen pocket parks located around the city.

He told us about a new survey - similar to the facilities survey they conducted some time ago - that will focus on programming for the department. He encouraged city residents to fill out the quick survey and share their wish list for programs, trips, and other classes/services they'd like Parks & Recreation to offer. You can find the survey here: https://www.winchesterva.gov/parks

He also gave a quick rundown of several upcoming events such as Fun in the Sun on July 8, 2023, Cardboard Boat Regatta on July 8, 2023, and of course, the Independence Eve Fireworks display that also includes free admission earlier in the evening to the Winchester Royals Valley League Baseball game.
