Our conversation today with Kary Haun from Shenandoah County Tourism took us to Basye to chat with Eric & Jennifer Luvaas at Wetlands Trading Company.
The pair gave us a bit of history for how the business got started and explained how it's changed and grown since opening in December 2022. Wetlands Trading Company features a gourmet market, a garden center, and a relaxing outdoor space to enjoy them both. The property features several seating areas overlooking koi and frog ponds complete with waterfalls.
Jennifer told us about the types of items you can find in the
gourmet market and why it was a much-needed enterprise for the
area. The offerings include freshly baked biscotti, scones,
bread,
and other baked goods, plus jams, maple syrup, honey, peanuts,
craft sodas, and specialty cheeses. She also told us about the grab
& go meal boxes that are perfect for lunch or a hostess gift. They
can feature charcuterie ingredients, baked goods, or food for
sandwiches.
Eric explained what types of things you can find in the garden center that include plants, planters, bird feeders/food, bird baths, solar lighting, wind chimes, statuary, candles, and home decor. Jennifer still operates Three Thirty 3 Designs, so you will also find furniture and decor that she has designed or created. They also intend to host seasonal events, pop-up sales with other artisans, and serve as a destination for people to enjoy food, beverages, company, and live music.
Kary reminded listeners of the many activities that are available in the area including Freed's Biscuit Company, Smileys Ice Cream, mini golf, as well as Bryce Resort and Shenandoah Valley Music Festival.
